But as it is said, “All’s well that ends well”, he emerged victoriously. In this post, let’s time travel and witness the Adnan Sami Weight Loss journey.
How Did He Put on Weight?
It was really loathsome to see him gaining weight ridiculously. He was though not genetic but Adnan suffered from an eating disorder. He was an emotional eater and use to eat a lot whenever he was very happy or sad(1). Those days, he was going through a personal crisis due to which he got depressed and was all loaded up with stress. Broken marriages could be one of the reasons. This made him reach out to food for his comfort and the cycle began. A series of depression went on making him eat more food for his solace. Eventually, he started gaining enormously.

He was approx 200kgs at that point in time. His massive body and weight started having a huge impact on his health. He used a walker for walking even a few steps. Because of his weight issues, he wasn’t able to sleep as he suffered from sleep apnea (a condition when the person is not able to breathe due to improper supply of oxygen)(2).
In 2005, His knees developed fluid retention or lymphedema due to his heavy body. This required surgery and got him bedridden for approx 3 months. He wasn’t able to travel, every time he had a problem while buying the clothes. At a stage, doctors gave up and told him that he has only the next 6 months to live his life.
Criticism for His Weight and Body Shaming
Media is ever ready for making gossips about celebrities. This followed Mr. Sami too. He was criticized and body shamed everywhere he went, whether it’s on a newspaper or social media, his overweight body became the talk of the town. This made him more depressed.
He however accepted in an interview that he never was apologetic for his size. He romanced many girls in his album with that huge size and he very well explained that “physicality has nothing to do with love and romance. Just because you are obese it doesn’t mean you don’t have a heart filled with love.” Such positivity we can say. This played a major role in Adnan Sami Weight Loss journey.
What Inspired Him for Weight Loss?
It was very clear that he needed to lose his weight after he got bedridden. Even after this, Adnan was not ready to change himself until the doctor made an obnoxious prediction. They told him that he won’t be living for more than 6 months. He has to something for himself. This time Adnan had to make a decision because he knew that his body has started giving up from inside.
When he was ready to resign his fate and about to quit, it was his father who shook him internally and said: “Adnan enough is enough”. He gave him the ultimatum that he would walk out from his life until Adnan gives himself 6 months for his body transformation. So, it actually wasn’t an inspiration but a decision made by a worried father for his son. And voila! It worked.
Adnan left all his work and travels for the next 3 months and moved to Houston. There he handed himself to the nutritionist. And this was the first step towards the betterment of his life.
Adnan Sami’s Diet Plan for Weight Loss
By observing Adnan’s eating habits his nutritionist understood that he is an emotional eater and eats only when he was happy or sad. He had an unconditional love for eating which made him oversized. Eating less helped him to lose a lot of weight.
His nutritionist suggested him to stay away from white rice, oils, bread, and sugar. Such small lifestyle changes made a huge positive difference in his weight loss. He was asked only to eat popcorn without butter, vegetable salads, tandoori fish, boiled chicken, and boiled daal. He was refrained from consuming any alcoholic beverages, sodas and aerated drinks as it hinders the weight loss process. But sugar-free drinks, shakes, ice lollies were allowed.
Let’s check out his everyday diet plan:
Early morning: a cup of sugarless tea.
Breakfast: simple oats/fruit juice
Lunch: vegetable salad with 1 tablespoon of fat-free dressing and tandoori fish.
Dinner: only plain boiled daal (no roti or rice)
Although, he was allowed to eat chicken for protein intake instead of daal.
But since he doesn’t like chicken so he stuck with daal routine for dinner.
His diet was simple but nutrient rich. Fruits are best for weight loss. Tandoori fish provides vitamin D, B, and essential fatty acids which aids the process. His diet is full protein-rich foods like dal, chicken etc.
Adnan Sami’s Exercise Routine for Weight Loss
Being extremely obese, Adnan was unable to perform any kind of exercises initially. Doing exercise at a whopping 230kg body would produce strain and could cause a heart attack. So at first, he was kept under low carb diet until he lost some subsequential weight to start his workout plan routine.
Under the guidance of fitness trainer Prashant Sawant from Mumbai, he started his exercise routine after losing 40 kgs of weight. He was then too heavy to run, so he initiated with slow walks. When his weight went more down, he increased the distance of walking. Later he was able to run on a treadmill.
Now finally he was prepared for the exercise program:
He did this for several months and the results are before you now. Adnan lost a huge amount of weight. Now he could sleep better, stand for a longer time and do other works with ease.
Adnan’s message to people:
He says, “everyone who sees an obese person, makes an assumption that he or she is obese because of his laziness or carelessness. Nobody bothers to care that there could be other reasons (genes, emotional issues, and metabolic rates) behind obesity. People generally look down upon obese people and make fun of them. Please don’t make fun of anybody’s disability – if they are handicapped, blind, short, tall; it’s not their fault. This is also true for obesity.”
“Everybody, including me, had written me off. I proved everyone, including me, wrong. If I can overcome it, anybody can!”
Such a powerful, genuine message by Adnan over his obesity and people body shaming him. Celebrities like him are a motivator and positive vibe promoter to everybody who is going through this issue.
This was truly an inspiration for those who are overweight or obese and want to lose weight. We can always change our destiny by making simple, mindful and persistent efforts.
